Filipino tennis ace Alex Eala has booked a spot in the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 Eastbourne Open after a thrilling victory over world No. 13 Jelena Ostapenko.
Eala showed remarkable resilience after being blanked in the opening set, 0-6. She stormed back in the second set with a 6-2 win and was leading 3-2 in the decider when Ostapenko was forced to retire due to an apparent injury. The match lasted one hour and 37 minutes.
The win marks Eala’s second straight triumph over the Latvian star, following her upset at the Miami Open earlier this year, proving that her victories against top-tier opponents are no fluke.
Down but not out, Eala demonstrated impressive mental fortitude, quickly regaining control in the second set with aggressive baseline play and improved service consistency. She then took an early 2-0 lead in the third set before Ostapenko signalled her retirement.
Eala now awaits the winner of the match between Great Britain’s Francesca Jones (world No. 125) and Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska (world No. 45) to determine her next opponent in the quarterfinals.
This marks another major milestone in Eala’s young career, as she continues her steady climb on the WTA Tour.
