In a world where the construction industry is often dominated by men, one woman defied the odds and carved her path to success. Cezarah Rowena Discaya, affectionately known as “Ate Sarah,” is a testament to resilience, determination and the power of hard work. From being a minimum-wage worker to becoming one of the most respected entrepreneurs in the industry, her journey is an inspiration to many.
A Story of Perseverance and Hard Work
Born to hardworking parents who were overseas workers in London, Ate Sarah was no stranger to struggle. Her mother worked as a chambermaid in a hotel, while her father served as a waiter. Witnessing their sacrifices instilled in her a strong sense of ambition and dedication to achieving her dreams.
She pursued her education at St. Lawrence at St. Paul’s Catholic School in London before returning to the Philippines to complete a degree in Business Administration majoring in Computer Management at Pasig Catholic College. Her quest for knowledge continued as she studied Management of Service Institution at La Consolacion College.
Despite financial challenges, Ate Sarah refused to give up. She worked tirelessly as a student while earning only a minimal income. With just one peso to her name in 1998, she relied on her perseverance and sharp business acumen to create opportunities that would later lead to her success. Starting as a receptionist, she quickly climbed the corporate ladder, taking on roles as a communications specialist, marketing specialist, recruitment specialist, and liaison officer.
Breaking Barriers in Business
Ate Sarah’s passion for business and education extended beyond the confines of corporate work. She became an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, imparting knowledge to multilingual learners for a decade. However, her major breakthrough came in 2015 when she entered the construction industry. She started as a marketing promoter at St. Gerrard Construction General Contractor and Development Corporation. Her dedication and expertise quickly earned her promotions, eventually securing the position of Vice President and later Chief Financial Officer (CFO), a role she continues to hold today.
Now, as the CEO of an 18-company conglomerate that provides jobs for over 10,000 people, Ate Sarah exemplifies leadership, intelligence, and compassion. She remains committed to helping others rise from adversity, believing that hard work and perseverance are the keys to success.
