Believe It or Not? is a heartfelt movie that addresses the serious issue of bullying in schools. The film tells the story of Billy, played by Potchi Angeles, who faces significant challenges after moving to a new school. Accompanying his mother, a live-in housemaid, to her job gives him the opportunity to attend a private school. However, things quickly become difficult for Billy when he encounters Brenda, the school bully, portrayed by Bianca Tan. But as the story unfolds, her character develops in a way that sheds light on her actions.
Billy’s journey is supported by his ‘special’ friend, Yvette, played by Shira Tweg. Yvette’s character shows how important friendship is during tough times, providing encouragement and support to Billy. The film also features several first-time actors, all of whom impress with their performances, making their characters feel genuine and relatable.
Director Errol Ropero skillfully tackles the tough topic of bullying throughout the film. He explores how bullies often have their own issues, providing insight into their behavior and encouraging viewers to understand different perspectives. Interestingly, Ropero revealed that some of the scenes in the movie were inspired by his personal experiences as a bully when he was younger. This unique perspective adds authenticity to the story, making it relatable and impactful.
Along with the main story about bullying, the movie includes a heartfelt family drama that brings warmth and depth to the story. These family moments show how important it is to have support from loved ones, especially as Billy faces tough times at school.
The movie also highlights the hard work teachers do when dealing with bullies, showing the challenges they face. It gives a glimpse into the struggles teachers have in making sure schools are safe for all students, while managing different issues behind the scenes.
What makes Believe It or Not? stand out is its straightforward and honest storytelling. The film not only explores the causes and serious effects of bullying but also emphasizes the vital role family plays in shaping children’s behavior. Rather than relying on flashy visuals or complex production, it delivers a simple yet impactful narrative that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Enhancing also the film’s appeal is the performance by the popular P-Pop group BILIB, who sing their catchy song Say Watcha Wanna Say. With its danceable beat and uplifting lyrics about standing up for what is right, the song adds an enjoyable element, especially for younger audiences.
A collaboration project of A&Q Productions Films and AFA Entertainment and Prime Stream, Inc., with executive producer Atty. Aldwin F. Alegre, the movie will be shown in various schools nationwide. (PAN)
