Two Filipino fishermen were injured when the engine of their fishing boat exploded near Bajo de Masinloc on Scarborough Shoal yesterday, Saturday, June 29, 2024.
According to reports and photos shared by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), it is clear that the boat’s motor was heavily damaged.
The PCG reported that the China Coast Guard attempted to obstruct their rescue efforts despite being informed that it was an emergency.
PCG Spokesperson Rear Admiral Armand Balilio stated that, according to the captain of BRP Sindangan (MRRV-4407), the explosion was caused by a malfunctioning battery starter motor.
The fishermen were brought to Subic Bay via the PCG vessel.
