Starting this September, commuting becomes more affordable for students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) as the Department of Transportation (DOTr) rolls out new white personalized beep cards that automatically apply the 50% fare discount in LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 lines. This initiative aims to streamline the fare discount process and ease the daily commute for thousands of eligible passengers.
According to the DOTr, the new white beep cards are designed to automatically recognize and apply discounted fares upon tapping, eliminating the need to present physical IDs or rely on manual verification. This is part of the government’s efforts to modernize public transportation and promote inclusivity across the railway systems in Metro Manila.
Students can now enjoy the benefit of reduced fares without the hassle of lining up for fare verification or carrying additional documents. Likewise, senior citizens and PWDs—who often face mobility challenges—can now experience a smoother and more dignified commuting experience, thanks to the automatic discount feature embedded in these personalized cards.
To avail of the white beep card, eligible individuals must present valid proof of identity (such as a school ID, senior citizen ID, or PWD ID) at designated rail station booths or partner registration centers. The process includes data encoding and photo capture to ensure that each card is personalized and protected from misuse.
This move is expected to encourage more Filipinos to use mass transportation while ensuring that those who are most in need of fare discounts actually receive them with ease. The DOTr encourages all eligible sectors to apply early to take full advantage of the new system as soon as it goes live this September. Cali Demi
