PLDT Inc (PLDT) and the Makati City Police nabbed six individuals after they were caught trying to steal underground copper cables along Kalayaan Avenue in Barangay Olympia.
Using professional-grade tools, contractor outfits, and fictitious warning signs, the suspects pretended to be water utility employees and attempted to remove almost two tonnes of PLDT copper lines. The operation involved the discovery of one of the suspects inside a manhole.
Bolt cutters, metal saws, warning devices, and over 96 metres (2,000 kg) of severed copper cables were found by the authorities.
With assistance from PLDT’s Greater Metro Manila South Asset Protection Division, the suspects were taken to the Makati Police Station for the inquest procedures.
“This incident underscores the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in protecting critical infrastructure,” Willie S. Antalan, Head of PLDT’s Asset Protection Division for Greater Metro Manila South said. “We remain steadfast in our mission to ensure uninterrupted service and community safety through sustained vigilance and partnership,” he added.
