Intramuros, the heart of old Manila, came alive once more on May 18 as the Grand Santacruzan 2025 unfolded along its storied streets. The timeless charm of cobblestones, Spanish-era churches, and moss-covered stone walls provided the perfect setting for an event that blended history, pageantry, and faith into one breathtaking spectacle. Organized by The Runway Atelier, this year’s celebration transformed the Walled City into a living canvas of Filipino tradition, where beauty and devotion walked hand in hand.
The Sagala, a cherished Filipino procession rooted in religious and cultural significance, found new life in the historic halls of San Agustin Church and the garden paths of Puerto Real. Amid the glow of golden hour, participants dressed in stunning gowns and finely detailed crowns paid tribute to a faith that has endured, and a culture that continues to evolve while honoring its roots.
Among those who walked with grace and pride was Star Music artist Aurora Elizabeth “Lizzie” Aguinaldo, who portrayed Reyna Elena. Her name may be familiar not only because of her rising music career but also because of her lineage—she is the great-great-granddaughter of General Emilio Aguinaldo, the country’s first president. For Lizzie, the experience carried deep personal meaning.
“This is my first time to portray Reyna Elena, and to do it here in Intramuros makes it even more special,” she shared. “I’ve always joined sagalas in Cavite, but this one feels different—engrande and truly unforgettable.” Dressed regally and beaming with pride, she added, “Being part of this grand event reminds me of how rich and meaningful our culture is. I feel so proud wearing this crown not just as a performer but as a Filipina.”

While known for her singles Baka Pwede Na and Lato-Lato,both penned by Joven Tan, Lizzie is also stepping into the world of film with the upcoming Lola Barang and preparing to release new music. Her creative inspirations—Taylor Swift, Moira, and Sarah Geronimo—echo in her work, which blends modern expression with emotional depth.
Another standout that evening was Marianne Beatriz Batalla Bermundo, who embodied the Queen of Pure Hearts. Her deep red gown, symbolic of love and courage, turned heads, but it was her calm, sincere presence that lingered in the minds of many.
“It’s truly an honor to be part of such a meaningful tradition,” she said. “I hope my presence here inspires younger generations to embrace and preserve the beauty of our Filipino culture. Our heritage is something we should walk with—proudly and purposefully.”
As the procession wound its way through Intramuros, it became clear this wasn’t just a showcase of gowns and crowns. It was a statement. A celebration. A living expression of the values that shape the Filipino identity: devotion to faith, respect for family and history, and a creative spirit that shines through even the most traditional of practices.
The organizers from Tiny Pieces emphasized the event’s role in inspiring the youth to embrace their roots. “Our vision is to preserve and promote our traditions, especially among the youth,” they said. “Through this event, we empower the new generation to walk with pride, purpose, and cultural identity.”
