Sara Duterte and her allies were the first to rejoice over Alan Peter Cayetano’s ascent to the Senate presidency.
As the new Senate chief the expectation was, atleast by pro-Sara supporters, that Cayetano would go out of his way to make sure the impeachment case against the VP will not see the light of day.
So when Cayetano’s first order of business as SP, was to convene the Senate as an mpeachment Court, such did not sit well with DDS fanatics.
The impeachment is the biggest existential threat against Sara Duterte.
By ordering the trial to proceed forwith, Cayetano did not put out the fire.
In the eyes of the DDS, and probably even the camp of Sara, Cayetano’s surpising move only made the flames burn even stronger.
The DDS are frustrated. They are angered. Hatred is the natural consequence for those who felt betrayed.
As a friend of the Dutertes, Cayetano’s first instinct, the DDS believe, should have been to salvage Sara from those who want her vanished from the face of the earth through impeachment.
But Cayetano is now obviously playing coy. If this were a poker game he is playing his hand like a seasoned “pro”.
Cayetano is full of surprises. He will keep his options open for as long as he can because he knows the stakes are high.
With the impeachment trial now certain to happen, if I were Sara Duterte, I would start finding out for myself who my “real” friends are.
Alan Peter Cayetano should be first on that list.
Clearly, Cayetano’s political calculations have changed dramatically.
He is now in the best position either to protect and defend Sara Duterte or deliver her to the wolves.
It’s a precious leverage that could turn things around for Cayetano’s benefit alone, not for the nation as he so desperately paints it, of course.
DDS keyboard warriors have begun exposing Cayetano online—how he supposedly used the Dutertes and their allies in the Senate to become SP.
DDS fanatics consider Cayetano’s pro-impeachment stance a form of betrayal.
His being the Senate President is not to protect Sara, they think.
Rather, it’s an opportunity for Cayetano to secure concessions from either side of the political spectrum.
If Sara Duterte wants to survive the impeachment, it’s not an automatic thing for her.
She has to ask Alan Peter Cayetano nicely and titilate him with an offer he can’t resist.
The same holds true for those who want the VP’s head.
The bidding war has just commenced.
For now, nothing could stop Cayetano from taking advantage of the precarious political situation brought about by the Sara impeachment.
For as along as he stays as SP and presides over with the trial, Sara Dueterte and her enemies are at the mercy of Cayetano.
Hawak ni Cayetano ang BEAT!
He will milk every moment of this life-changing chance for his own good, no more, no less.
