Pulsing stage lights, anime soundtracks, cosplay, and the aroma of Japanese street food will soon fill the air at the Quirino Grandstand as Matsuri Festival 2026 brings a modern take on Japan’s beloved festival culture to the heart of Manila.
Set for April 25, 2026, the event celebrates the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Japan and the Philippines, highlighting the long-standing cultural ties shared by the two nations.
In Japan, a “matsuri” is more than just a festival—it is a centuries-old community tradition. Across the country, matsuri celebrations honor local heritage, seasonal changes, and cultural traditions. Streets come alive with music, performances, traditional clothing such as yukata, and rows of street food stalls. These gatherings are known for their festive energy and strong sense of community, bringing people together in celebration.
Organizers of Matsuri Festival 2026 aim to recreate that spirit in Manila while giving it a contemporary twist. The event will gather anime fans, cosplayers, music lovers, and cultural enthusiasts in a large-scale celebration featuring live performances, cosplay showcases, Japanese food and cultural exhibits, and interactive activities inspired by Japanese pop culture.

Headlining the event is Japanese singer Maki Otsuki, widely recognized for performing iconic songs from the anime series One Piece. She will be joined by Japanese idol group Fairy Tales,Rin, bringing energetic performances that highlight Japan’s vibrant pop culture scene.
Filipino performers will also take center stage. The lineup includes rock band Mayonnaise, pop group Sunkissed Lola, and Japinoy pop-rock group SkyGarden, whose music blends Filipino and J-Rock influences. Festivalgoers can also expect laughs from stand-up comedian Alex Calleja, one of the country’s most recognizable comedy performers.
The festival will also feature appearances from well-known cosplayer and media personality Myrtle Sarrosa, a prominent figure in the Philippine anime and cosplay community.
According to the organizers, the event is designed not only as entertainment but also as a celebration of cultural connection.
“Matsuri Festival 2026 is more than just an entertainment event,” organizers said. “It is a celebration of friendship, cultural exchange, and the growing connection between Japan and the Philippines through music, anime, and the arts.”
They added that the festival reflects how Japanese pop culture has become deeply embedded in Filipino youth culture.
“Anime, cosplay, and Japanese music have a strong following in the Philippines. Through this festival, we want fans to experience the energy and community spirit of a real Japanese matsuri while also celebrating Filipino creativity,” the organizers said.
Tickets are currently available through pre-order, with Bronze and Silver tickets starting at ₱250. Festival-goers who want a more immersive experience can upgrade to Gold or Platinum tickets, which include premium perks such as VIP access, a Yukata Experience, and other exclusive festival privileges.
