The Department of Health (DOH) announced on Wednesday that the number of people who died because of dengue rose to 396 this year, as the cases normally increase during the rainy season.
In its latest data, the DOH reported 396 deaths from January 1 to August 10, 2024. This is compared to the 421 deaths during the same period last year.
Cases of dengue also increased by 24%, from 18,784 from June 30-July 13 to 23,290 from July 14–27.
The DOH said that delayed consultations and reports could explain why only 13,369 cases were recorded from July 28 to August 10.
For the period from January 1 to August 10, the countrywide count of dengue cases reached a total of 150,354.
This is 39% higher compared with that in the same period last year, with 107,953 cases.
