Senator Jinggoy Estrada on Monday urged employers to have some compassion on their employees who may have to take a break from their tasks due to extreme heat.
According to Estrada, while the Department of Labor and Employment’s Advisory No. 17-2022 provides an option for workers not to report for work to avoid extreme heat, employers may go beyond the advisory.
“We must ensure that the workers are not unfairly burdened. We cannot overlook the financial strain this places on workers. Under the DOLE policy, allowing employees to utilize their accrued leave credits is a step in the right direction,” he said.
“But we must likewise consider those who no longer have sufficient leave balances and in this situation, I urge employers to exercise compassion and understanding during extreme weather conditions. I call upon employers to go beyond the minimum requirements outlined in DOLE Advisory No. 17-2022,” he added.
Estrada, who chairs the Senate Committee on Labor, Employment and Human Resources Development, said employers may also opt to provide incentives to their employees who show exemplary performance despite the extreme heat.
“It is important to recognize and appreciate the dedication of workers who are working amid intense heat,” he said.
“Providing additional incentives or benefits to those who brave the heat to keep our economy running during weather disturbances is fair and shows our commitment to their well-being,” he added.
