Farmers groups are calling for National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan’s resignation due to the proposed drop in the country’s rice import tariff rates.
Pambansang Mannalon, Mag-uuma, Magbabaul, Magsasaka ng Pilipinas (P4MP) president Anong Manalo said that “farmers are the backbone of the economy,” during 24 Oras Weekend on Sunday reported by Mav Gonzales.
This comes after the NEDA Board authorised a 15% reduction in rice tariffs for both in-quota and out-quota rates till 2028.
The groups are now requesting a discussion with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., claiming that NEDA failed to consult with them and that the Tariff Commission did not pass it.
They also intend to file a temporary restraining order against the legislation if Marcos signs it into law, claiming that it is impossible to reduce rice prices to P29 per kilo.
Federal of Free Farmers’ Leony Montemayor, meanwhile said that the NEDA chief is giving false hope to PBBM and they think that PBBM will hear their sides first.
The government previously stated that the National Food Authority (NFA) would purchase local farmer production, however, SINAG stated that the agency may only buy 5% of the inventories.
Balisacan has no comment so far.
