Illegal tobacco production and sales are not only against the law—they’re robbing hospitals, medical programs, and life-saving services that millions of Filipinos depend on.
The DILG reports that over ₱1 billion in lost taxes from illegal cigarettes could have funded public hospitals and essential medical programs, helping those who cannot afford private care.
During a raid in Barangay Panipuan, Pampanga, Secretary Jonvic Remulla warned, “Every illegal cigarette sold takes away resources that should have gone to the health of our people.”
Police records show that recent operations seized ₱1.78 billion worth of illegal cigarettes, resulting in more than ₱1 billion in lost funds for hospitals such as the Lung Center, Philippine Heart Center, and National Kidney and Transplant Institute.
The consequences are clear: ordinary Filipinos suffer the most, facing overcrowded wards, delayed treatments, and limited medical resources. Stopping the illegal trade is essential to protect public health.--Cali Demi
