The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) has recommended a five-meter zone of avoidance around the recently discovered fault that caused the 6.9 magnitude quake that occurred on September 30.
The fault line was discovered at Sitio Looc in Barangay Nailon.
“PHIVOLCS Quick Response Team found the onland extension of the newly-named Bogo Bay Fault, which caused the Magnitude 6.9 Offshore Northern Cebu Earthquake on September 30, 2025,” the department said.
“PHIVOLCS recommends a 5-meter zone of avoidance from the trace of the fault or edge of the deformation zone,” it added.
Experts observed an open cracks, fault scarps, and a small pressure mounds within a 2-meter-wide deformation zone in the area.
“Initial field mapping recorded about 200 meters of surface rupture, while drone surveys revealed the fault may extend up to 1.5 kilometers, showing signs of right-lateral movement,” it said.
PHILVOCS also added that a “Field verification is ongoing to determine the full extent of the rupture.” Aileen Lor
