The Philippine National Police (PNP) is looking into whether to roll out extra safety requirements for gun ownership, you know, as of now.
PNP Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said incidents involving guns in schools and communities—especially ones that involve minors—often start from the same basic problem, which is firearm accessibility.
Because of that, they are thinking of making a full gun safety seminar a mandatory step, not only when someone is applying for a License to Own and Possess Firearms (LTOPF) and when they register the gun, but also as part of the renewal, like during the next cycle.
Nartatez added that he already told the Civil Security Group (CSG) to draft the final and updated guidelines on how these gun safety seminars should be conducted regularly for all registered gun owners across the country.
As part of the review, they are also consulting with gun shop owners to take in their suggestions, and see what works in real life.
Nartatez said these added gun safety measures will be enforced together with the ongoing and even more intensified push against loose firearms.
