Manama: Bahrain’s contemporary art scene continues to flourish, blending rich cultural heritage with fresh creative perspectives. One of the season’s highlights is the “Al Masyaf” exhibition, organized in partnership with The Bahrain Arts Society. Opened on June 29, 2026, at The Art Centre, the exhibition runs daily until September 8, showcasing the works of both established and emerging artists.
Among them is 17-year-old visual artist Lulwa Ahmed Al-Hayki, whose distinctive blend of realism and abstraction has earned her growing recognition. In this exclusive interview with Pinoy Aksyon News Bahrain, she shares the inspiration behind her work, the influences shaping her artistic vision, and her aspirations for the future.
Pinoy Aksyon News: What inspired the two pieces you chose to showcase at the “Al Masyaf” exhibition?
Lulwa: The exhibition celebrates the essence of summer—its warmth, vibrant energy, and unique atmosphere. I wanted my artworks to reflect that spirit through vivid colors, warmth, and the radiant glow that makes summer so inspiring. Each piece captures a different aspect of the season while expressing my own artistic perspective.
Pinoy Aksyon News: The exhibition features many respected artists in Bahrain. What does it mean to have your work displayed alongside them?
Lulwa: It is truly an honor. Seeing my work exhibited alongside such accomplished artists fills me with pride and motivates me to continue growing. Being part of this exhibition is an important milestone that encourages me to keep developing my craft and exploring new creative possibilities.
Pinoy Aksyon News: Your style combines realism with abstraction. What inspired you to blend these two artistic forms?
Lulwa: Realism allows me to capture authentic human emotion with precision, while abstraction gives me the freedom to experiment and innovate. Combining the two creates a balance that defines my artistic identity. I often describe my work as speaking through “the language of the eyes,” while incorporating my signature “Babylonian Blue,” inspired by the depth and heritage of Iraqi civilization and reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Together, these elements create works that are visually expressive and emotionally meaningful.
Pinoy Aksyon News: How has Bahrain influenced your artistic journey?
Lulwa: Bahrain has played a major role in shaping who I am as an artist. From the encouragement of my family to the support of my teachers, I was inspired to participate in exhibitions organized by the Ministry of Education from a young age. Joining the Center for Gifted Student Care was another important milestone that strengthened my confidence and artistic growth. Today, I am proud to serve as the youngest Youth Director in Bahrain for the Interaction Arts Greek Community, an opportunity that continues to expand my perspective while remaining deeply connected to my Bahraini roots.
Pinoy Aksyon News: What are your aspirations for the future?
Lulwa: My goal is to present my work on the international stage and participate in exhibitions around the world. I hope to share my artistic vision with a wider audience and, one day, curate my own solo exhibition dedicated entirely to my creative journey. I also look forward to experimenting with new contemporary techniques while continuing to refine my unique artistic voice.
Pinoy Aksyon News: What advice would you give to young Bahraini artists who hope to follow a similar path?
Lulwa: My advice to aspiring artists is simple yet profound: prioritize authenticity. Create work that aligns perfectly with your true self and your cultural identity. The most important thing is that your art gives you a sense of genuine satisfaction—it has to resonate with you first. Stay relentlessly focused on your artistic goals, and take the time to experiment until you forge a signature style that is uniquely, undeniably yours. Your voice is your greatest asset; have the courage to trust it and share it with the world.
