The Philippines and Canada are taking significant steps to deepen their partnership in the agriculture and fishery sectors, following a high-level meeting between Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. and Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath Macdonald. The bilateral dialogue, held in Manila, aimed to enhance trade, technical collaboration, and mutual support for both nations’ agri-fishery industries.
From 2020 to 2024, the trade value between the Philippines and Canada in the agri-fishery sector reached an impressive $2.39 billion, highlighting the growing strength of their economic cooperation. Discussions between the two ministers focused on several key areas including high-value crops, African Swine Fever (ASF) response strategies, food security, and ongoing free trade negotiations.

One of the major highlights of the meeting was the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement, which is being explored as a pathway to expand market access in the Southeast Asian region. Both sides expressed optimism about the agreement’s potential to bring more opportunities for farmers, fisherfolk, and agri-entrepreneurs in their respective countries.
Secretary Tiu Laurel emphasized Canada’s role as a reliable partner in the Philippines’ efforts to become globally competitive in agriculture. He noted that Canada’s continued support in areas such as innovation, sustainability, and food production will be instrumental in uplifting the country’s agricultural sector.
The Department of Agriculture acknowledged the significance of Minister Macdonald’s visit, not just as a trade mission but also as a show of commitment to strengthening the resilience and capacity of farmers, fisherfolk, and food producers in both countries. The collaboration is expected to drive inclusive growth and knowledge exchange in the coming years. Cali Demi
