Despite China’s threat to arrest Filipino fishermen in Bajo de Masinloc, Zambales province, on June 15, politicians tied to Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez reassured them that the government is ready to protect them.
It is what Lower House politicians promised following the continuation of the public consultation in Botolan, Zambales, on the supposed “gentleman’s agreement” between former President Rodrigo Duterte and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the previous administration.

Zambales First District Re. Jefferson Khonghun stated that they understand their fears and worries.
He also expressed his confidence in the government’s ability to protect the fishermen who will sail at the Bajo de Masinloc.
Former actor and current Laguna Congressman Dan Fernandez advised that all fishermen should be bonded and should not be threatened by China’s threat.
He also emphasised that Bajo de Masinloc, popularly known as Scarborough Shoal, falls within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
