According to Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro, Duterte will go to court in the Netherlands before facing trial at the International Criminal Court.”
On Wednesday, Castro elaborated that the Dutch court will weigh the due process for Duterte’s arrest in the country. The ICC would then determine the sanction range for the former leader, from 30-year imprisonment to life imprisonment, if convicted of crimes against humanity.
According to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., he received an official copy of the so-called ICC warrant a few hours before Duterte arrived from Hong Kong last Tuesday.
“The arrest was made because Interpol requested it, and we have obligations to fulfill,” Marcos said simultaneously, stressing that the procedure was strictly followed and that legal requirements for it were attended to.
Duterte’s plane landed in Dubai after a layover at 8:03 a.m. Manila time on Wednesday. He left the Philippines at 11:03 p.m. the night before.
More developments on the case and the legal proceedings are expected in the coming days.
