According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), localised thunderstorms of sudden onset inundated several parts of Metro Manila early on Saturday evening, June 21, causing floods in those areas.
Flooding caused by heavy rains affected some major thoroughfares, including sections of EDSA and Quezon Avenue, rendering these areas impassable for light vehicles. The flooded areas include EDSA northbound near Balintawak, EDSA after the Quezon Avenue flyover, eastbound and westbound lanes of Quezon Avenue Biak na Bato, and G. Araneta Avenue, which was also submerged in both directions at Karilaya Street.
Inking beyond Quezon City, streets in Manila, Caloocan, and Valenzuela, like España Boulevard from Lacson to Vicente Cruz, and the intersection of España and Antipolo Street, were flooded knee-deep. In Barangay Tinajeros in Caloocan, water was reported to be gutter-deep along M.H. del Pilar, while parts of Gov. Pascual Avenue and McArthur Highway near Fatima University were also affected.
Torrential rains caused by a localized thunderstorm, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), are an event that commonly occurs during the wet season and often results in cases of urban flooding with little warning.
Authorities will continue to monitor these flood-prone areas as the rainy season continues.
