The Meralco Electric Co. (Meralco) expects a “flattish” total energy sales in 2025 as consumer demands weaken due to cooler temperatures.
“Technically, because of the extreme temperature last year compared to this year, we lost around 950 gigawatt hours (GWh). So net on net, we’re minus 160 GWh,” Geluz stated and gave an estimated 0.5 to 0.8 percent drop this year.
In 2024, Meralco recorded an all-time high of 54,325 GWh in sales as consumers experienced an extreme heat that caused an “organic contraction” in electricity use. This year, Geluz said that the volume may reach around 53,900 to 54,050 GWh; however, despite the dip, Meralco expects a rebound in 2026 with its continuous “aggressive energization.”
“But the good thing is, as we continue our aggressive energization this year, it will some sort of generate a lot of sales next year,” Geluz told reporters on the Energy Summit 2025 in Singapore.
With the repurposing of facilities previously utilised by Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs), Meralco is also finding prospects. Island Cove, a POGO hub purchased by EEI Corp., is being developed into a community, and spaces are being turned into offices, Geluz said.
Meralco has 8.18 million customers across Metro Manila as well as in provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Rizal, Laguna, parts of Batangas, Quezon, and Pampanga.
