Secretary Bienvenido “Benny” Laguesma of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has assumed jurisdiction over the looming strike at Interphil Laboratories in Calamba.
The Interphil Laboratories Employees Union – Federation of Free Workers (ILEU-FFW) had filed a notice of strike following a deadlock in collective bargaining negotiations. Despite efforts to resolve the issues through conciliation and mediation, an agreement was not reached, leading to a unanimous 100% strike vote by union members.
In response, Interphil Laboratories management petitioned the DOLE for assumption of jurisdiction to avert the strike and facilitate a resolution.
Secretary Laguesma, after careful consideration of the situation and the parties’ positions, has decided to assume jurisdiction over the dispute. This means that the DOLE will now take the lead in the negotiation process to find a fair and just resolution for both parties.
“We recognize the vital role of Interphil Laboratories in ensuring the availability of pharmaceutical products for the health and medical needs of the public,” Secretary Laguesma stated. “Any interruption in the operation of the company as a result of a strike or work stoppage may have damaging consequences not only on the concerned workers and their dependents who are directly affected but more importantly on the public.”
“Gusto namin ipakita sa management ang protesta subalit naudlot ito dahil sa assumption order na ito,”Dennis Gutierrez, union president of the Interphil Laboratories Employees Union-Federation of Free Workers (FFW), said. “Sana nakapagwelga kami — we are disappointed with the decision but we will comply with the assumption order pursuant to Article 278(g) of the Labor Code.”
Secretary Laguesma has called for a meeting between the union and management to discuss the issues and explore possible solutions on June 5, 2024, at 10 am at his office. The DOLE will closely monitor the situation to ensure that both parties comply with the decision and work towards a harmonious resolution.
