The United States government continues to strengthen its maritime cooperation with the Philippines through the recent completion and support of a major facility dedicated to the maintenance of Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessels. The US Department of Defense funded the construction of the P54 million ($950,000) Maintenance and Repair Group (MRG) Workshop located in Sangley Point, Cavite. The facility is expected to play a crucial role in sustaining the operational readiness of PCG vessels across the archipelago.
In partnership with the US Coast Guard, the design and outfitting of the MRG Workshop were supported by the US Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL). The collaboration aims to improve the technical capacity of the Philippine Coast Guard, ensuring vessels remain mission-ready for maritime patrols, search and rescue operations, and other security tasks.
Beyond the facility itself, the US government has also provided P1.9 million (around $34,500) worth of tools and equipment to further enhance the workshop’s capabilities. This donation, also from the INL, will help improve the PCG’s fleet maintenance efficiency. According to a statement from the US Embassy in the Philippines, these efforts are part of broader initiatives to support the country’s maritime security and law enforcement capabilities.
PCG Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Rommel Supangan welcomed the continued US support, describing the developments as “another meaningful step forward” in the growing partnership between the two nations. He emphasized the significance of the new workshop and equipment in advancing the PCG’s mission and improving regional maritime security.
Looking ahead, the US, through various agencies, plans to provide additional assistance in the form of technical training, logistics planning, and further equipment donations. These efforts are aimed at enhancing the long-term sustainability of the PCG’s vessel maintenance systems, reinforcing the United States’ commitment to a secure and stable Indo-Pacific region.–Cali Demi
