Is it a Valentine’s Day championship for San Miguel Beer or a post-Valentine showdown deciding the fate of the Beermen and the Magnolia Hotshots?
Following their 108-98 victory on Sunday, the Beermen aim to conclude the battle today, Wednesday, seeking victory against the beleaguered Hotshots in Game 6 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
San Miguel has ample reason to go all out, primarily to avoid a winner-take-all scenario that could swing either way. Additionally, they want to give June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez some breathing room before their involvement with Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers.
Coach Jorge Gallent views this as extra preparation time for his Manila Southwoods seniors team debut in the PAL Interclub. However, closing out a series is never easy, especially against the defiant Magnolia team.
At 2-3, the Hotshots remain optimistic, drawing inspiration from their comeback from 0-2 down in the series, as stated by Magnolia guard Mark Barroca.
Import Tyler Bey expresses confidence, believing they can win two more games and emphasizing faith in the team, coaching staff, and himself.
The series has been a test of will and character, showcasing a duel of playing styles. San Miguel’s lethal shooting secured victories in Games One (103-95), Two (109-85), and Five (108-98), while Magnolia’s lockdown defense was pivotal in Games Three (88-80) and Four (96-85).
Jericho Cruz made a significant impact in the last game with a 30-point performance, including eight three-pointers.
Bey acknowledges the need to respect every player on the opposing team and highlights the failure to adjust quickly against Cruz.
The Hotshots seek payback, but the Beermen are determined to secure a rare championship celebration on Valentine’s Day by finishing off the Hotshots.
