The Los Angeles Lakers selected Bronny James as the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, marking the first father-son duo in NBA history.
NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum announced the draft himself.
The draft move does not guarantee that father and son will play in the same game, nor does it guarantee that Bronny James will be on the Lakers’ roster next season.
However, it increases the prospect of a father-son on-court combo competing in the NBA together. There are approximately 100 occurrences in NBA history of players joining the league after their fathers played, but they always happened at least five years after the father’s career finished.
Bronny James might make his Lakers debut on July 12 in Las Vegas against the Houston Rockets in the franchise’s summer league opener.
Who is Bronny James
Bronny, 19, attends Sierra Canyon School in California and has signed to play collegiately for the USC Trojans.
In July 2023, he had a cardiac arrest, resulting in a congenital heart abnormality.
After healing, he returned to play, making 25 appearances in 2023-24, averaging five points, three rebounds, and two assists.
