MANILA, Philippines — Olympic champion Hidilyn Diaz is expected to play a key role in developing the next generation of Philippine weightlifting champions, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Patrick Gregorio said Tuesday.
Gregorio attended the HD LiftOff 2026 at Glorietta over the weekend, where young lifters competed across various age categories.
He described the event as an important platform for developing young athletes and encouraging them to pursue higher goals in sports.
“The HD LiftOff is a launchpad for champions of tomorrow. The young lifters who stepped onto the platform this weekend are the future of Philippine sports, and this event gives them the confidence to dream bigger,” Gregorio said.
Diaz, who was present during the event, highlighted the importance of providing young weightlifters with opportunities to compete and showcase their abilities.
Among the participants was Samantha Diaz, Hidilyn’s niece, who finished second in the Youth U12 Girls category.
Asian junior champion and continental record-holder Albert Ian Delos Santos also competed in the open division.
The event featured emerging athletes as well as veteran lifters who delivered performances in the masters division.
Held in a busy mall setting, HD LiftOff attracted both sports fans and shoppers, providing young athletes with an opportunity to compete before a wider audience.
“Every great athlete starts with a first lift. By staging HD LiftOff, Hidilyn has created the perfect springboard for our youth to rise, compete, and eventually carry the Philippine flag on the world stage,” Gregorio said.
