MANILA, Philippines — Kapuso actress Barbie Forteza is set to shed her wholesome image as she headlines “Saving Cherry,” a romantic comedy-drama that she described as the boldest and most mature project of her acting career.
Produced by Regal Entertainment, the film is scheduled to premiere in cinemas nationwide on Sept. 2.
During the film’s media conference at Gateway Cinema in Araneta City, Forteza said playing Cherry gave her the opportunity to explore a character unlike any she had portrayed before.
“Cherry is the wildest character I have ever played,” Forteza said, thanking director Ivan Andrew Payawal for allowing the cast creative freedom in interpreting their scenes.
The film follows Cherry, a conservative woman who has vowed to remain a virgin until marriage. Her life takes an unexpected turn after discovering that her fiancé, Jude, portrayed by Khalil Ramos, had been unfaithful on the eve of their wedding. Determined to move forward, Cherry embarks on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
Forteza admitted she never imagined taking on such a daring role in her return to Regal Entertainment.
“This is my most mature role so far. It tackles marriage, and my character is already married. The audience will definitely see a different side of me,” she said.
The 29-year-old actress also revealed that several scenes in the movie would never pass for television broadcast because of their mature content.
“I feel like what I did here is something I could never do on TV. My parents weren’t comfortable with that level of boldness, but they’re excited to see the film because they’ll witness a different version of me,” she said.
Meanwhile, content creator and actor Sassa Gurl shared that the female cast initially felt awkward around one another before filming began. According to Sassa, Forteza suggested a get-together that helped the group build camaraderie.
Mikee Quintos also admitted she initially had reservations about Sassa after previously becoming the subject of one of the latter’s online content. However, Sassa apologized, and the incident eventually strengthened their friendship.
Forteza also disclosed that she informed actress Gabbi Garcia, the longtime partner of Khalil Ramos, about the project before filming.
“I texted Gabbi because Khalil and I were working together. She told me she was excited to watch the movie,” Forteza said, adding that the script pushed her well beyond her previous comfort zone.
Also joining the cast are Mika Salamanca and AC Bonifacio, who said audiences will see their comedic side in the film, along with JC Alcantara, Kokoy De Santos, Joey Marquez, and other veteran and young actors.
Sassa Gurl, meanwhile, revealed that “Saving Cherry” will be one of two films he is releasing this September, alongside “Multwo,” in which he plays his first lead role.
“Saving Cherry” opens in cinemas nationwide on Sept. 2.
