The Department of Agriculture’s Bantay Presyo has reported a significant rise in chicken prices across some Metro Manila markets, with costs reaching as high as P250 per kilogram, while the lowest prices remain at P190 per kilogram.
Amid these escalating market prices, the DA is actively engaged in discussions with the poultry industry to address the issue.
In a recent ambush interview, DA Undersecretary Deogracias Victor Savellano promised to support farmers affected by the country’s various challenges, including high production costs, the importation of feed additives, and the impacts of avian influenza. These factors have all contributed to the current supply situation.
According to the United Broiler Raisers Association (UBRA), the average farm gate price of chicken increased from P91.47 per kilogram in October 2023 to P101.32 per kilogram in April 2024.
Savellano suggested that the P250 per kilogram price might not persist, and consumers may soon find chicken or other meat alternatives at lower prices in stores.
UBRA President Jose Gerardo Feliciano said that the P250 per kilo price is an unreasonable increase, given the average markup from the farm gate price is typically between P70 to P75.
