The Department of Agriculture (DA) said they are considering either extending the onion import ban or decreasing import levels following the bumper crop season from March to April.
According to Agriculture Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa, the increase in production will lead to a 40 percent increase in onion land planted in 2023.
This year, Central Luzon alone will produce 10,388 hectares of onions.
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the onion industry’s production increased by 28.58 percent in the first quarter of 2024, totaling P8.098 billion, up from P6.298 billion in the same period last year.
Meanwhile, data for May is yet to be released, as they will ask for the actual supply first with the Bureau of Plant and Industry (BPI).
