According to the Department of Agriculture, two new rice varieties, “Sulit Rice” and “Nutri Rice,” will be available to Filipinos as part of the agricultural New Year initiative.
Agriculture Assistant Secretary Genevieve Guevarra disclosed at the recent news forum that Sulit Rice would be sold at ₱36 per kilo while Nutri Rice would be sold at ₱38 per kilo. Nutri Rice was described as “brownish” whereas Sulit Rice is “super broken” rice that is white.
These new varieties will be available starting in 2025, along with the mixed local and imported well-milled rice now provided for ₱40 per kilo in Kadiwa stores.
Guevarra responded to the further cuts in rice prices in Kadiwa stores by stating that the government was aiming for equilibrium so that it would not adversely affect the farmers.
“Nakakadismaya din po sa mga magsasaka kung masyadong bababaan din po ang presyo ng bigas,”Guevarra said.
Kadiwa ng Pangulo, a program of the Rice for All initiative, sells rice at prices lower than regular markets.
The DA also plans to open additional Kadiwa kiosks across important public markets in the country, including those at MRT and LRT stations.
The current Kadiwa kiosks functional are found in:
Kamuning Market
Malabon Central Market
New Las Piñas City Public Market
Pasay City Public Market
Guadalupe Market
MRT-North Avenue Station
LRT-Monumento Station
WFresh kiosks are proposed to open at Balintawak (Cloverleaf) Market, Maypajo Public Market in Quezon City, Cartimar Market in Pasay City, Grace Market in Pateros, and Paco Market within this month.
