The Department of Health (DOH) reported 67 new cases of leptospirosis between July 14 and July 27, coinciding with the impact of Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon on Metro Manila and nearby regions.
DOH epidemiologists remain cautious, noting that more cases may be reported in the coming weeks due to potential delays in documentation. Leptospirosis, which has an incubation period of two to 30 days, typically presents symptoms one to two weeks after exposure to floodwaters.
As of July 27, the DOH has recorded a total of 1,444 leptospirosis cases this year, representing a 42% decrease compared to the 2,505 cases reported during the same period in 2023. The disease has claimed 162 lives so far.
In a related update, the DOH highlighted a continuing increase in dengue cases. Reported cases rose from 12,153 between June 16 and 29 to 18,349 between June 30 and July 13.
The DOH noted a “continuous rise” in dengue cases over the past six weeks, particularly in Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Cagayan Valley, and Calabarzon. Aileen Lor
