Senator Christopher “Bong” Go proposed increasing the national budget for sports in the Philippines, especially at the grassroots level, given the honor these athletes bring to the country compared to the little they receive.
Speaking at the proclamation held at The Tent, Manila Hotel, on Saturday, May 17, Go stressed the need for government support for athletes and sports as an avenue for nation-building and youth development. A long-time supporter of sports, Go stressed that sports keep the youth away from drugs and in a healthy lifestyle.
In an earlier radio interview for TRUE FM’s Power and Play with Atty. Noli Eala, the senator, expounded further on his commitment to supporting and promoting increased funding to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in his capacity as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports, elucidating his vision of sustainable sports development starting from the grassroots level.
Despite their limited resources, Go stated that Filipino athletes achieved many remarkable feats on the world stage, including the first Olympic gold medal for the Philippines in 2020 and wins in this year’s 2024 Paris Games. He suggested that these accomplishments should receive investments and support consistently.
Go also reiterate that aside from the financial support needed by the athletes, government support should include nutrition, training facilities, and proper equipment so that athletes do not have to struggle with material hindrances and can focus on their performance.
The senator’s push for more investment in grassroots sports is just one facet of his broader agenda of nurturing athletic ability and ensuring the country continues to do well in international competitions.
