In a major boost for the country’s transport workforce, the government is set to roll out its P20 per kilo subsidized rice program to include transport workers beginning Tuesday, September 16, 2025. This initiative is part of the administration’s broader effort to bring affordable, quality rice to more Filipino households, especially those in essential sectors.
According to the Department of Agriculture (DA), the initial rollout will take place in key locations across the country, with thousands of transport workers expected to benefit. The Bureau of Animal Industry in Quezon City will serve 17,633 beneficiaries, while 1,001 workers will be assisted at the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority in Navotas City. In Angeles City, Pampanga, 9,961 transport workers from Barangay Pandan are on the list. Meanwhile, Cebu City’s Food Terminal Inc. will support 24,742 beneficiaries, and Tagum City will provide for 3,650 eligible individuals.
The inclusion of transport workers in the program recognizes their vital role in daily life and the economy. From jeepney and tricycle drivers to couriers and logistics personnel, these workers will now have access to rice at a significantly lower price, helping ease the impact of inflation and high food costs.
The DA assured the public that the rice to be distributed is of good quality and that systems are in place to ensure a smooth and orderly distribution. Beneficiaries will be guided through the necessary verification steps at each location to prevent delays and ensure transparency.
This expansion of the rice subsidy program is seen as a strong step toward achieving food security and social equity.
