The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has confirmed that the low-pressure area, which has been monitored for the past few days, has intensified into a tropical storm.
The weather disturbance entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) at around 2:00 a.m. on August 18 and was given the local name Huaning.
According to the latest advisory from PAGASA, the storm was reported just east-north-east of Itbayat, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 55 kph.
Aside from Huaning, PAGASA is also tracking another low-pressure area outside PAR that could affect weather conditions in the following days.
The state weather bureau continues to alert the public, especially those in northern Luzon, to remain vigilant and to monitor for updates regarding the possible changes in track and intensity of Huaning.
