Typhoon Leon, also known internationally as Kong-Rey, is intensifying rapidly over the waters east of Cagayan, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday afternoon.
Typhoon Leon was estimated to be at around 505 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, or 515 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan, as of 4 p.m. The storm is carrying maximum sustained winds of 150 km/h and gusts up to 185 km/h.
Leon is moving west-northwest at 10 km/h. PAGASA said that the typhoon will continue to develop strength over the Philippine Sea as it approaches the eastern coast of Taiwan by Thursday and may reach super typhoon strength. In its traverse, Leon will go through Batanes, bracing for severe weather conditions.
PAGASA imposed a Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 in eight places, reminding public residents there to prepare for howling winds and power blackout possibilities.
Heavy Rainfall In Northern Luzon
Heavy to torrential rains, up to 200 mm are estimated from Tuesday afternoon to early Wednesday over Batanes; Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Isabela, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique will be under moderate to heavy with rains estimated from 100 to 200 mm.
Ilocos Sur, Abra, Kalinga, Calamian Islands, Romblon, Negros Occidental, and Aklan should experience moderate to heavy rains (50 to 100mm).
Residents of areas must prepare for flooding, slides, and strong winds the PAGASA warned or advised communities in affected areas that are preparing.
