PHILIP M. LUSTRE JR. is a book writer and journalist with more than four decades of journalistic experience. He writes on various topics: politics, economy, social issues, environment, philosophy, among others. He worked in various publications and edited the defunct Manila Newsfeatures and Commentaries and Pilosopong Tasyo newsmagazine, which experimented the use of Filipino in serious topics. He writes a regular triweekly column in Filipino on the Police Files Tonite tabloid daily under the pen name “Ba Ipe.” A fixture in social media, Ba Ipe was born in 1954 in Kalookan, then a town of Rizal, but was raised in Tondo, Manila. He finished his elementary at the Holy Child Catholic School in Tondo and high school at the UST Education High School. He went to the University of the East to complete his AB major in Sociology. Ba Ipe describes himself as an advocate of liberal democracy, who believes strongly in the 1987 Constitution and democratic traditions, particularly “free, honest, open, and clean” elections, and pluralism, or tolerance for different belief systems. He believes in the territorial integrity of the Philippines and opposes hegemony of any kind, including China’s
ON Monday, or May 11, the House of Representatives is to approve the Articles of Impeachment, which the House Committee on Justice, chaired by Rep. Jinky Luistro of Batangas, has ironed out over the last four months. An overwhelming majority of its 316 members areto approve it, leading to a single conclusion – Vice President Sara Duterte will be impeached for the second time. The 1987 Constitution requires only a third of the House members, or 106, but at least 215 members are to vote for her second impeachment. Upon its official approval by the House in a plenary session,…
NO doubt about it. The fuel crisis is causing the nation a lot of pain, and the tendency is to find somebody to blame. It is not the Middle East, which has been forced to suspend crude oil deliveries to the rest of the world on account of the war between Iran and the US-Israel Coalition. The region pumps out 30% to 35% of the world’s crude oil, or roughly 30-36 million barrels per day out of the 100 million barrels of global daily output. That production—and its shipment—has practically halted. No, not the countries half way around the world,…
MY THIRD book, “KILL KILL KILL Extrajudicial Killings in the Philippines; Crimes Against Humanity v. Rodrigo Duterte Et Al. Revised and Updated Edition,” discusses at length the many pivotal developments that took place in 2024 and 2025. One of them was the emergence of the powerful QuadCom, the supercommittee that was formed in the House of Representatives in mid-2024 to look into among other things the anti-drug strategy pursued by the infamous Duterte administration. The QuadCom facilitated many revelations in its probe of the war on drugs that Gongdi pursued. Care to read. Excerpts: FOR a larger part of Philippine…
IF ELECTIONS were to be held today, Misfit Sara could win handily. Despite the absence of opponents, Misfit Sara has the popular advantage in at least five regions – the four Cebuano-speaking regions in Mindanao and the Central Visayas region. This is the imperative to create her political downfall before the 2028 presidential elections. There should be an end when what could be regarded as the backward elements of Philippine society decide the political fate of this country. This is not easy but the political process should start to roll in the next two and a half years from now.…
RODRIGO DUTERTE’S minions like Salvador Medialdea and his DDS have been insisting that he was “kidnapped” and flown to The Hague against his will. This is not true. In my third book, which is the revised and updated version of my first book “KILL KILL KILL Extrajudicial Killings in the Philippines; Crimes Against Humanity v. Rodrigo Duterte Et. Al.”, I laid down the factual narrative of what actually transpired on the fateful day of March 11, 2025. Please read, Chapter 15 of my third book: MANY Filipinos felt jubilant when Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on that fateful morning of March…
MY third book is essentially a revised and updated edition of my first book titled “KILL KILL KILL Extrajudicial Killings in the Philippines; Crimes Against Humanity v. Rodrigo Duterte Et. Al.” It contains the developments that occurred over the last two years. I finished the original edition in Sept., 2023; the second edition this Nov. I will submit the revised and updated edition sometime this week. Printed copies will be out by Dec. I have added seven new chapters to the first 11 chapters on Gongdi’s war on drugs and the spate of extrajudicial killings in the country. Excerpts of…
MANY people did not expect much from the initial crimes against humanity charges, which then Sen. Sonny Trillanes and Rep. Gary Alejano filed eight years ago before the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Rodrigo Duterte and his minions, including Bato dela Rosa, Jose Calida, among others. What Trillanes and his group did was an uphill climb. They had to endure the broackbats and ridicule from their colleagues in the ruling coalition and democratic opposition. But they persisted. In the long run, they were correct. The charges have prospered. Gongdi is now languishing in an ICC prison facility in The Netherlands…
IT was bewildering even to ordinary citizens the zeal and passion of Rodente Marcoleta to defend the corrupt Discaya couple, when it was asserted by certain witnesses and admitted and confirmed by the very corrupt couple that they engaged in massive plunder of state funds through overpriced and substandard infrastructure projects. It was Rodente who insisted that the corrupt Discaya couple be admitted to the Witness Protection Program (WPP) and enjoy state protection. But he opposed any attempt to require them to return their loot, raising the stupid argument that “the law does not say so.” Rodente raised the wrong argument…
THERE is much reason to believe that Rodente Marcoleta, the pretentious lawmaker who always projects he knows his law but actually does not, is a fraud. No wonder, legal giants like Adolf Azcuna and Antonio Carpio, two retired magistrates of the Supreme Court, look down on him to the point of ridiculing him publicly. Just to continue the refutation of Rodente’s assertion that there is no law that requires the Discayas to return their stashed ill-gotten wealth (or loot) in exchange for their acceptance in the Witness Protection Program (WPP). In brief, Rodente wanted state protection ot the Discayas while…
CARTOONIST George Baker created in 1942 a character “Sad Sack,” who happened to be a hapless soldier who always found himself in an unfortunate situation. Over time, this character has become an idiomatic expression to refer to any person, who is a magnet for misfortune. Sad Sack is an unhappy, unlucky, or even inept character despite having good intentions. He is one, who is always at the losing end, or on the wrong side of history. Rodente Marcoleta, although elected as senator in the May 12 midterm elections and a senator for only five months, qualifies as the local version…
